Exercise Book Cover Design: The Time Machine

I had various different ideas for a cover based on the Time Machine, some included illustrations of a time machine, others the sun at different ages and colours (something the main character see’s on his travels). I considered doing a drawing of the evolution of man as is described in the book down to eventual odd crab like creatures.

But I wasn’t really happy with any of those ideas an until I’d found an approach to the design of ‘The War of the Worlds’ cover I couldn’t think of how to start this one. However as soon as I had complete the first cover I was much clearer about this cover.

The idea was simple: A silhouette of a pocket watch against a backdrop of lots of numbers. Nothing too glamorous or complex but simple and stunning.

I let some of the features of the ‘The war of the worlds’ cover come through, like the black border, the silhouette shape, the pattern background, elements of the background pattern creeping onto the book spine, and the same style of hand drawn letters. This in my mind helps the books to fulfill the brief in creating books that could work as a set.
