Exercise: Abstract cities – Marseille

Having never visited Marseille I got stuck into reading up about it on the rough guide website:

Having brainstormed a few ideas I then began a search for inspirational images:

I found the different colours of the boats inspiring and felt they would make good accent colours against a backdrop of blues and yellows to represent the colours of the sea and houses within the city. The city has quite a messy almost sporadic feel with all the houses so tightly packed in and the boats. So I wanted to create a fairly busy image to reflect that:

This cover was the first cover I created using Photoshop. I didn’t enjoy using Photoshop as much as Illustrator for this as it felt less intuitive.  I’m also not too sure about the less figurative cover but I am happy with the use of colour.
