Again the rough guide was my starting point for research into the city of Managua.
I also looked at trip advisor to find some more images and a tourists view point. I found looking at photos that people took very helpful in terms of building up a idea of colours in the city.
Looking at the photos from the Crowne Plaza hotel the thing that struck me most was the way the green plant life interrupted the structure of the building. I wanted to incorporate some of that darker green in the cover image.
It’s not visible in the photo above but apparently around this abandoned site are lots of red an black flags which were the colours of the revolution. This inspired me to use some of that bright/brilliant red in the cover.
Apparently Managua is structurally very chaotic with a poor and complex road system. I didn’t want to include road like shapes in the cover but felt like if I made the cover a busy image with shapes overlapping that could represent the chaos!
Managua is a city built around volcano’s with something like eleven fault lines. I think that makes Volcano’s quite a feature of the city. I really liked the purple against the green in the photo above which inspired me to get some of that mix into my cover image.
The final two photo’s above are examples of how people add colour to the landscape through their clothing, painting of buildings and food. So whilst the city isn’t full of interesting architectural buildings the people add a vibrancy.
I think that’s well reflected in the cover image:
I used Photoshop to create this cover and feel like it was an ok outcome. I’m pleased with the green and purple and tried to add some accent colours with the red and orange. I’m not sure it’s the best image possible but feels okay to leave it there.
